SEO Tips for Small Business

Posted: January 10, 2009

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has gained much popularity over the last few years.  In addition, Google and Yahoo offer many free services web masters can utilize to get better traction for their clients.  Unfortunately, small businesses have to fight an uphill battle against their larger competitors.  So one might ask themselves, what can our small business do to get better SEO results?

1) Take advantage of all the free tools from search engine providers.  Google's webmaster tools are very straight forward and give insight into what you are doing right and/or wrong SEO.  For example, it will recognize broken links, give search query info, disable URLs from the engine and more.

2) Small businesses need to stay local.  For example, an accouting firm in Arlington, VA will not get visibility under the keyword "accountant".  They need to target a smaller local audience.  Therefore, content and meta tags need to be written towards the audience in Arlington.  This will allow high visibiliy for the keywords "accountant arlington".

3) Be creative.  From thinking of uncommon keyword combinations to creating a unique online tool that can drive traffic.
